Both of Microsoft's dates have now passed. Microsoft began removing Publisher from Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026, and says subscribers can no longer open or edit files in it. Microsoft said access would end on or shortly after that date as its removal update rolls out. If yours still opens, save PDFs of your files today. Support for bought copies ended on October 13. A bought copy that is already installed keeps running, without updates or security fixes. Your .pub files were not deleted or changed. stillPUB opens them in your browser, keeps them editable, and can convert a whole folder to PDF and editable copies in one step. 1.0.1 is a maintenance release: updated dependencies, nothing you will see change. Since 1.0, the Mac command line downloads are signed and notarized by Apple, so macOS accepts them like any other trusted download. Get them from the downloads section.
stillPUB 1.0 is the first full release. It is the same app you know, after a full review of the app and a long list of fixes. The ones you might notice:
Text keeps its formatting. Pressing Enter, deleting a line, adding a line break or fitting text to its box no longer moves alignment, spacing or styles onto the wrong paragraph, shrinks stored font sizes, or removes a hyperlink further down.
Pages stay put. Pages added or duplicated while a master page is open are kept. Duplicated linked text no longer doubles. Facing pages move together.
Printing is the right size. Booklets, cards and labels set up from the gallery print at their own size and position. Crop marks line up at any scale. Page Setup no longer nudges every size when you press OK without changing anything.
Mail merge is safer. Editing a text box with Preview Results on keeps the merge fields. Page numbers and counts start over for each person. Zip Code + 4 values from Excel keep their dash and leading zero.
Imports read more. Pictures on Publisher master pages decode correctly, RTF files keep their symbols and table cells, and PDF text with pattern fills or typed-on annotations keeps its page picture instead of losing it. Every bullet in the Bullets gallery prints as a bullet, not a box.
Clearer when something goes wrong. A .pub file that will not open says so in plain words, with a Tell us about this file link. Browsers that cannot reopen files on their own say so instead of showing an empty Recent list, and Word files stay in Recent after a reload. An update waits while a folder conversion is running or unsaved.
Send feedback. A Send feedback link is on the start screen, in the File menu, and at the bottom of every page here. It starts an email in your own mail program with the app version and your browser, never your document.
The command line tool and the AI bridge got fixes too: Cancel during Connecting really cancels, saving works on drives without hard links, and agent setup from the standalone binary starts correctly. The privacy policy now says what happens to files you email us.
A fix release with no new features. Duplicate Page no longer changes the original page when it holds linked text boxes. Linked text keeps blank paragraphs and list numbers across boxes. Mail merge label sheets and merged pages follow the Mailings selection, and exports fill fields only from the record you are previewing. Text boxes with inner margins now break lines the same way in PDF, Print, JPG and PNG as on screen, so PDFs made before 0.5.1 from imported Publisher files are worth exporting again. Save As GIF writes a valid picture for busy pages.
Convert a folder of Publisher files on the start screen turns every .pub file in a folder into a PDF and an editable .stillpub copy, one at a time on your computer, and saves them in one zip with a report. File > Next issue makes next week's or next month's copy of a bulletin or newsletter, listing every date and issue number it will change so you can check each one first; the open file is never changed. Check my printer in the print dialog prints a test sheet and saves a printer profile that fixes upside-down or shifted back pages. Tab stops can now be right, center or decimal, with dot, dash or line leaders. Table cells can have dashed, dotted or double borders on any side. Imported Publisher tables and tab stops still need a check against the original; the compatibility guide says what to look at.
Two releases on one day. 0.4.3 shows a Publisher import report every time a .pub file opens, listing what came across and what to check, adds stillpub scan to the command line tool to check a whole folder of .pub files without changing them, and adds the compatibility guide. 0.4.4 adds text wrap around pictures and shapes, drop caps, small caps, nested lists, Spanish and French spell check, and fallback fonts for Arabic, Hebrew and Chinese text. The Chinese font now downloads only when a page needs it.
Instead of guessing, we ran the same 22 real Publisher files through stillPUB, LibreOffice Draw and Scribus and wrote down the results, including where LibreOffice does as well or better. A Mailings tab brings mail merge from CSV or Excel lists, with address blocks, greeting lines, picture fields, a preview, and Finish & Merge to PDF or Avery label sheets. The Review tab adds spell check on F7. Design Checker, under File > Info, finds common layout problems and takes you to each one. A Page Design tab gathers Page Setup, layout guides, color schemes and page backgrounds. Save As PDF has quality presets with crop marks and bleed for a print shop. Word files now bring their headers, footers and page numbers.
Four small releases in one day closed nearly every finding from the church document audit: Save As opens the file picker directly from the click, recovery banners never auto-apply an update, and a run of layout fixes for tables, WordArt, facing pages and linked text boxes. Also new: on-device spell check, columns inside a text box, and Publisher-style master pages.
Opens Word .docx files as editable page layouts. Exports the current page, a range or all pages as JPG or PNG at 96, 150 or 300 dpi. Adds the Sunday Bulletin, Church Directory and Program Booklet templates and an Avery 5160 label sheet.
The stillPUB command line tool, which opens, edits and exports documents without the browser, now comes as standalone downloads for Mac, Windows and Linux, with no Node or npm to install. It also runs a local MCP server so your own AI agent can work on a document on your machine. Details on the agents page.
stillPUB opens PDF files as one full-page picture per page, so you can lay new text and shapes over a document you no longer have the source for, then export again. The renderer runs in the browser and is cached for offline use. The app is now licensed under Apache 2.0.
stillPUB opens Microsoft Publisher .pub files in your browser and keeps them editable: text boxes, pictures and pages, the way you worked in Publisher. It exports PDFs with embedded fonts and comes with blank, flyer, card and newsletter templates. Everything happens on your own computer, and nothing is uploaded. A command line tool and a local AI bridge came with it. The same day, 0.1.1 made the Install button show in every browser, with plain instructions where the browser has no install prompt.
